Trichloroethylene is a nonflammable, volatile, colorless chlorinated solvent with a slightly sweet odor.
Trichloroethylene is used as a basic raw material in the metallurgical and rubber industries, in the formulation of adhesives, thinners, insulating varnishes for metal wires, solvents for coatings, in the extraction of certain oils and waxes, and in electroplating. Trichloroethylene does not attack synthetic fibers, and its heating requires a relatively low amount of energy due to its low heat of vaporization and specific heat.
Trichloroethylene is widely used as a metal degreasing agent without damaging the treated surfaces. Its action is enhanced by its low surface tension, which provides high wetting power, rapid penetration, and effective solvency of greasy substances.
