Triethanolamine 85%

Triethanolamine 85% is a weak base classified as an amino alcohol. It appears as a clear, colorless liquid with an ammoniacal odor. It is a hygroscopic product, soluble in water, ethyl alcohol, and chloroform, and insoluble in benzene, ether, and petroleum distillates.

Triethanolamine 85% is used in the sanitation and cleaning products industry as an alkalizing agent in formulations for laundry and dishwashing soaps and detergents, non-corrosive degreasers, polishing waxes, multipurpose detergents, and disinfectants. In addition, it can be used as an emulsifier in soap-based liquid detergents and transparent pine oil-based disinfectants, producing the so-called “blooming effect” when the disinfectant is diluted in water.

As an alkalizing agent for dodecylbenzenesulfonic acid, it forms an organic salt that is more soluble in water than its corresponding sodium salt. This reaction enables the production of liquid detergents for manual dishwashing with a reduced cloud point and greater stability, reducing the need for hydrotropes such as urea and SXS (sodium xylene sulfonate). Triethanolamine 85% can also act as an alkalizing agent for long-chain fatty acids, such as lauric, ricinoleic, oleic, and stearic acids, resulting in the formation of water-soluble soaps.

Other applications of Triethanolamine 85% include its use as an intermediate in concrete additives and adhesives, as an accelerator in the rubber vulcanization process, as an inhibitor and stabilizer in pesticide and herbicide formulations, and as a catalyst in the manufacture of polyurethane (PU) foams, among others.
