Xylene

Xylene is an aromatic solvent obtained through the fractional distillation of petroleum. It is a mixture of xylene isomers, composed primarily of m-xylene and p-xylene. It also contains smaller amounts of o-xylene—which is partially separated during the process—and ethylbenzene.

Xylene is a colorless, flammable liquid. It is highly miscible with most organic solvents but has low miscibility with water.

Xylene can be used as an aromatic solvent in formulations requiring slower evaporation, owing to its medium boiling point. It is widely used in solvent preparations for insecticides, pesticides, herbicides, and general agrochemicals, as it offers good solvency for many of the active ingredients used in these compositions.

In the paint, rubber, dye, varnish, and lacquer industries, xylene is used to formulate solvents and to adjust resin viscosity. Additionally, xylene can serve as a cleaning agent for steel, a component in paint thinners, and a raw material for the production of sodium xylene sulfonate. (CAS: 1330-20-7)
